When I Started Wriring Horror

I’ve heard it sad that writers are born, not made. Well you may be born with the need to write, but the ability to write is a honed skill. It takes practice and dedication. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Mostly I wrote for myself of friends. In the Navy I wrote under the pen name Theodore Bawd (I’ll let you figure out what that meant) for my subs newsletter. And for the past 20 or so years I’ve written a very tongue in cheek Christmas letter for friends and family. I started writing for publication back in 1995. My writing of fiction went into hibernation for a while when I returned to the nuclear power industry because I was writing very technical shit all day. But I’m retired now and the keyboard calls.

People sometimes ask me when I started writing horror. As far as I can remember it was back in 4th or 5th grade. We had to fill in the blanks in the following sentence”

The ________ dog laid ______ in the ______ summer sun.

My answer:

The _dead_ dog laid _rotting_ in the __hot_ summer sun.

Today that might get a kid sent to a therapist, back then it just got me a lot of strange looks. Now that kind of thinking gets me short stories and novels.
